A re-release of the 2010 fan favorite, with light revisions and an expanded ending.

For the past couple years Laurel's been coasting, hiding in the backseat while her life drifts off course. Then one summer afternoon a tall, built bruiser named Flynn strides in and steers her straight into an infatuation she never saw coming.

Flynn introduces Laurel to things she’s never imagined before—to the violent but exciting realm of the underground boxing circuit, to rough sex and even rougher role-playing, and to an attraction she craves even as it intimidates her. As Flynn invites her deeper into his world and his life, Laurel has to make a choice—let fear keep her holed up where it’s safe, or take a chance and fight for the man who makes her feel more alive than she’d dreamed possible.

One of the things that made me happiest about reading Willing Victim (besides the amaze-balls writing) was that Flynn’s casual sex partner (essentially ‘the other woman’) is never made out to be a slut by either the hero or the heroine. That would have been the easy writing choice, but the author declined to take it, and it made me very happy as a reader. You’ll be hard pressed to find any slut-shaming in McKenna’s books. I also liked the way that Flynn's kink is not explained as the product of some messed up childhood but, rather, just the way his sexuality is wired. Also while the role playing of non-consensual sex adds edginess to the book, there's also a fair bit of humour and lighter romance as the heroine experiences the highs and lows of bagging and then getting to know the object of her crush. When I read Badger I wondered if the vigilante scene in this book was inspired by it or vice versa.

Willing Victim Flynn and Laurel Book 1 edition by Cara McKenna Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Willing Victim was a quick but very sexy read. The first part of a duet. I really enjoyed myself and my curiosity was captured immediately by the mysterious Flynn and the solitary Laurel. The pace of the story was fast and straight to the point, which is what I want when I read a novella.

Laurel and Flynn were two very fascinating characters especially the latter. I was very intrigued by what made him have those needs when being intimate with a woman. He was certainly very skilled and was very considerate of his partners. That scene when Laurel was watching Flynn and Pam was insanely hot and deliciously erotic. Also how deeply affected Laurel became just by listening and watching Flynn. I enjoyed how their platonic and sexual relationship progressed into something more. Maybe. Who knows?

This was my first book by Cara McKenna and she knocked it out of the park with her flawless and honest prose. I need more Flynn and Laurel and thankfully there's a sequel.

Laurel is drawn to Flynn from the moment they meet. There's something sexy and dangerous about him that has her wanting to know him better. A night watching Flynn at an underground fight turns into a night of awakening desires that Laurel never knew she had. Flynn gives her the option of running but Laurel believes it'll be worth it to stay.

Gah! There was just something so addicting about Flynn that even I was drawn to him. He's kinda mysterious yet he's as straightforward as any man you'll meet. He knows what he likes and knows what he wants and doesn't intend on settling for less. Laurel had been living day by day and didn't realize she was only coasting by until she met Flynn. She's a great character. She's a lot stronger than she gave herself credit for and it's obvious that these two characters are perfect for each other.

I believe this story could be read as a standalone because it ends in a HFN. However a sequel has been released entitled Brutal Game and I'm looking forward to seeing how Flynn and Laurel are doing.

A friend recommended I explore the writing of Ms. McKenna and I'm so glad I did. Laurel and Flynn are complex, likable characters. With each scene, we learn a little bit more about what makes them tick and why they just might be perfect for each other. Willing Victim is an example of what I often describe as intelligent kink. There is not a false note in this story and what a treat it was to read. My only suggestion? Start reading earlier in the evening that I did. I ended up staying awake until after 200am...oy!

I very much look forward to exploring Ms. McKenna's other titles.
I told myself I wasn't going to buy any more ebooks until I cleared out my , but then I saw one of my friends' reviews for this book pop up in my feed, and realized it was a whole dollar cheaper than the last time I looked at it, and it was remastered and expanded.

Well, shoot...so much for any pretense of fragile self-control.

To be fair, WILLING VICTIM has been on my to-read list for a while. I've had half a dozen people recommend it to me, and the summary seemed really good. Plus, I've read another book about rape play, called ASKING FOR IT, and the inevitable comparisons between the two books made me even more curious.

Both books do deal with rape play but the approach is drastically different. ASKING FOR IT is more in keeping with the "dark" erotic romance trend spurred on by the popularity of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. Even though it deals with kink and BDSM-like themes in a fairly straightforward way, both characters are tortured and have dark paths, inadvertently contributing to the stereotype that normal, well-adjusted people can't get involved in the kink/BDSM scene.

ASKING FOR IT is also a full-length novel, which means it has times to expand on characterization and relationships in a way that WILLING VICTIM, which is a novella, doesn't.

I liked both books, but I do think that being a longer book gives ASKING FOR IT an advantage that it definitely utilizes to its fullest extent, which is probably why I enjoyed that book more. WILLING VICTIM, on the other hand, has better characters, and given the page time they have, I think the author did a fantastic job breathing life and complexity into them. These characters have their fair share of issues too, but it's more normal, run-of-the-mill stuff that doesn't tie into histories of abuse.

Let's take a moment to appreciate the hero in this book, Michael Flynn. He really is a decent guy. Yes, he's into some edgy stuff in the bedroom, but the author makes it very clear that Flynn would never go beyond what a woman wants, and would always stop if she said stop. I also thought it was really sweet that he watched to make sure that women leaving his apartment got into their cars safely. That is such a considerate thing to do and speaking as a woman, I love it when men do this. Also, those arms and abs. And that accent. I'm sorry, but I can't even right now.

Will definitely have to check out some of this author's other work!

4 out of 5 stars.
